Overview

Observations

The Met Office's weather observations are key to understanding current atmospheric conditions and form the basis for accurate weather forecasting. They provide the ground truth from which many important products and services are formed, including vital validation of forecasts that enable continuous quality improvement to services delivered.

Specification

  • Our Land Observations API provides access to recent observational data. The API is ideal for applications that need accurate, hourly data on key weather parameters observed at the land surface.

Data from ground-based instruments is available from 150 locations, separated on average 50km from each other to provide the greatest representative coverage of the UK. Each of these stations have a scheduled maintenance visit every six months in which every instrument is checked for performance. In addition, sites are inspected every two years to ensure exposure classifications are kept to the internationally aligned standards – this will include identifying any changes to sites from trees or buildings for example.

All sensors are located within an enclosure and variables are measured according to World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) standards. A full list of available parameters can be found in the Glossary. Measurements are fully automated, with data logged at each station and transmitted centrally for processing. For synoptic purposes in the UK and internationally, standard observing times are hourly, each station reports 24 observations daily at 0000, 0100, 0200, through to 2300 UTC.
